INTRAMURALS
"Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."
- John Wooden, Purdue '32
Drawing inspiration from perhaps Beta's greatest athletic alumnus, we are fully committed to achieving success on the athletic fields. Our chapter believes that the development of the body is a vital component of an overall healthy lifestyle. As a result, we have made a strong showing in all of our athletic endeavors since our return to Miami University Greek life. This is our second year competing in Division I athletics, and we have more than excelled in each sport in which we play.
Our chapter has teams in virtually every sport that has a competitive league on Miami’s campus. Our outdoor soccer team won the fraternity championship before moving on to win the Miami championship as well. Beta’s softball team won the fraternity championship and came in 2nd overall. Both singles and doubles tennis dominated the competitio n to take home 1st place in both events. Our flag football team advanced to the tournament semi-finals and as a result placed 3rd overall. Our indoor soccer team won the fraternity championship while finishing 2nd overall. Doubles racquetball placed 1st in the fraternity league while our singles team placed 3rd. Our indoor volleyball team blew away the competition, going undefeated during the regular season, and winning both the fraternity and Miami championships. Our broomball team added to Beta’s success as they placed 3rd in the fraternity league. Our ultimate frisbee team compiled an undefeated regular season and continued to win the fraternity playoffs as the #1 overall seed. Beta’s basketball and hockey teams also had strong showings. The 2006-2007 school year proved to be one of Beta’s most successful years in Miami Intramural Sports, as we were crowned Division I Intramural Sports Champions.
Aside from intramural sports, each fall we commit our athletic efforts to the fierce competition of Greek Week. Twenty-five fraternities compete in sports ranging from football and basketball to track and dodgeball. This year Beta continued its athletic excellence and we were crowned Greek Week Champions for the 2006-2007 school year. Our volleyball, soccer, and broomball teams won their individual competitions, and our ultimate frisbee, basketball, swimming, track, kickball, and bandstand teams also gave a strong showing. Perhaps the highlight of the week is the puddle pull competition, in which our team is always in contention for the title. The closing event of the week, and generally the most popular, our team advanced far in the competition before losing to the eventual winner. Puddle pull, a complex version of tug-o-war, has ten men to a team. As the team sits in a row with their feet secured in holes, a caller stands over leading the team's movements against the opposing team.
Our chapter fully believes that while making every effort to win the day on the fields of competition is the ultimate goal, it is not more important then competing with honor and fair sportsmanship.
