FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I get involved with Greek life at Miami?
The best way to get involved with Greek life at Miami University is to register for Formal Recruitment through the Interfraternity Council. You can get more information about this at the Greek Affairs website or at the Greek Affairs Office, located on the 3rd floor of the Shriver Center, room 356 in the Student Activities Wing.

What is your pledge period like?
Our pledge period is eight weeks in length. The eight-week period is focused on positive growth and integration within the active chapter. Our non-hazing program allows for the positive development of the brother, as he will be educated in Beta's great history, lore, songs, and ritual. Pledges will also participate in community service events and partake in weekly study tables.

What kind of grades do members of Beta Theta Pi earn?
The members of the Alpha Chapter consistently remain among the top in grades on Miami University's campus. Our average GPA last semester was a 3.27. As devotion to the cultivation of the intellect is one of our focuses, we are consistently above the all-men's average and the all-fraternity average.

Is there a grade requirement to join?
Yes, the grade requirement to pledge or to be an active member of Beta Theta Pi is a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

How many men will pledge this semester?
It is difficult for the brothers of the chapter to accurately predict how many men will be invited to pledge, however we are always wanting to invite as many quality men to become brothers as possible. While precedent has little influence, previous pledge classes have been between 20 - 40 men.

What organizations do Betas participate in?
Betas are involved in numerous organizations across campus, including: Associated Student Government, Miami University Student Foundation, Miami Intramurals, Interfraternity Council, Miami University Men's Glee Club, Phi Alpha Delta, Campus Activities Council, Disciplinary Board, Miami Med, Beta Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Psi, Pi Sigma Epsilon, Miami Economics Club, Miami Finance Association, Business Student Advisory Council, Campus Crusade for Christ, The Miami Student, Greek Life Guides, Residence Hall Association, and the Miami Student Credit Union.

How competitive are your intramural teams?
Our intramural teams are consistently very competitive throughout the intramural seasons and special Greek Week events. We offer teams in almost every sport that the university offers, including: soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, softball, broomball, and hockey. We currently compete in Division I athletics.

What type of social events do you hold?
We hold a variety of social events with unique themes, ranging from grab-a-date parties to large parties with other sororities and fraternities on Miami University's campus. These parties are usually held at a private, Uptown establishment. We hold a fall semi-formal and a spring formal. These special events are typically held outside of Oxford (i.e. Cincinnati). In addition, numerous brotherhood events such as athletic tournaments and cookouts are scheduled throughout each semester.

Does the house have a cook?
Due to our excellent location near many of Oxford's restaurants, and the close availability of university food services, we do not have a cook.

What are the financial duties of each brother to the fraternity?
The financial duties to the fraternity are very comparable to other fraternities on Miami's campus. The social dues for the fraternity are $312.50 per semester. The cost of living in the house is $1,950 per semester. Additional fees including General Fraternity dues and insurance are also billed to individuals. These are approximately $300. Due to some initial one-time costs, the semester of pledging costs approximately $760.
