GREEK LIFE AT MIAMI & BETA'S ROLE

Miami University traditionally has had one of the nation's strongest Greek systems. There are currently about 30 social fraternities on campus, and there are nearly as many sororities. Beta Theta Pi, along with Sigma Chi, Phi Kappa Tau, and Phi Delta Theta fraternities were founded on our campus. Delta Zeta sorority was also founded at Miami. With such a strong Greek history and presence at Miami, roughly 1 in 3 students are Greek affiliated. Having this volume and variety, Miami University truly has a Greek organization that is a "perfect fit" for everyone.

Beta Theta Pi's place in Miami's Greek system has traditionally been one of strength and leadership. Created in 1839, Beta was the first fraternity founded on campus, and is the second oldest chapter at Miami. Throughout our storied history, Beta's have taken active leadership roles in numerous campus organizations, helped Miami's athletic teams onto victory, and succeeded in the classroom. Also, our alumni have a long tradition of giving back to both fraternity and university. Numerous brothers have held administrative positions with Beta Theta Pi General Fraternity, and others have been high-ranking University administrators. Today Miami has named over twenty of its buildings after Beta alumni in honor of their service to the University.

How does our chapter fit into Miami's Greek system today? In the current era of negative stereotypes, increased liability, hazing incidents, and decreasing membership, Beta is making a movement to realign ourselves with our origins. Fraternities were originally formed to honorably aid men in their development, and to prepare them for a successful lifetime, all while establishing lifetime friendships. Today, it is once again our goal to build strong bonds of brotherhood through positive channels, such as cultivating our intellects, committing time to helping our community becoming leaders on our campus, and enjoying our social lives with responsibility and gentlemanly conduct.

While we strive to be one of the best fraternities, we realize that all Greek organizations have but one collective fate. We are all only as strong as our weakest organization. With that in mind, Beta is making efforts to improve our Greek community, and to restore it to full glory.
